Welcome to the official web page for the Marshal of the Kingdom of Lochac within the Society for Creative Anachronism Inc.

Kingdom of Lochac Combat Handbook

IMPORTANT NEWS:

March 12, 2013 The new draft of the fighters' and marshals' handbooks are now available for public review. They can be found here as a combined document, or you can look at just the fighters' handbook, or marshals' handbook. There are still a lot of updates being made to these documents, with current efforts focussing on the marshals' handbook.

Feedback is welcome - please send it to the Earl Marshal (marshal@lochac.sca.org); remember that these are just drafts at this stage, and are not in force. All constructive feedback is welcome!

September 18, 2012 As per the announcement from the SCA US and the changes to the Society Marshals' Handbook in May 2012, polypropylene round rod of a diameter no greater than 31.8mm is now permissible as an alternative to rattan for single handed weapons within Lochac. Please take care with these swords, and report any injuries or issues encountered through your group marshals as soon as possible.

January 26, 2012 New authorisation forms are now available, with updated categories (including Target Archery Marshal) and fixed Lists postal addresses.

January 14, 2012 Thrown weapons (axes, maces, thrust and throw javelins) are no longer suspended, and may now be used again. Please note the following changes to the rules:

The maximum weight for a thrown weapon has been reduced from 907g (2lb) to 600g.
The maximum length for a throwing axe/mace handle is 450mm.

Please, use these weapons carefully.
Slings and staff slings are no longer permitted at Society level, and will be removed from the KOLCH.

January 9, 2012 Archery exemption finalised
It is with great pleasure that I wish to make known the publication of an formal exemption for Lochac combat archery practices by the Society Marshal. This exemption formalises the status we have claimed for a number of years, and due recognition for the work behind the scenes in procuring this document must go to my predecessor and now King, His Majesty Siridean, and also his predecessors who laid the foundations and began this work.

The document can be found here.

November 29, 2011 The society rules change regarding hand and wrist armour behind shields is NOT being implemented in Lochac at this time. The current Lochac standard, requiring hand and wrist protection remains in force.

August 26, 2011 2" Mandrake rubber fibreglass spear tips permitted.
The 2" rubber Mandrake tips for fibreglass spears have been approved at Society level, and have also been tested (during the term of Duke Siridean as KEM) within Lochac. No significant issues were found with them.

(For those not familiar with them, they can be found here.

As such, I am authorising their use within Lochac. Anyone holding a fibreglass spear authorisation may use these tips, but please take the time to familiarise yourself with their use, for example how to correctly attach them to your spear, and how they feel to be hit by - they will almost certainly not be the same as the tips you (or your opponent!) are used to, so please use caution.

September 15, 2010 The current fighters handbook KOLCH in section 2.3 has two out dated links concerning minor authorisation. Please refer to The Lochac Constable Page for the correct forms. Further to this as handed down by the Society Earl Marshal
Marking minors who participate with adults in martial activities
Any minor participating in martial activities (fighting / fencing / combat archery / siege / etc...) with adults will have their Kingdom's specific minor helm marking, or an event specified marking that will identify them as a minor participant on the front half of their helmet / mask. The marking is up to the Kingdom of residence or the Kingdom hosting the event and event staff shall be made aware of it. In addition to this all minors will have "minor" marked on their authorization card large enough that a list person can easily see it.

April 5, 2009 New version of the fighters handbook released

Changes since version 2.0 are documented in the change log

The main changes are to the standards for thrusting tips. The standards for low-profile thrusting tips on single-handed weapons have been reduced, and a standard for low-profile thrusting tips on two-handed weapons 2.28 m and under in length has been introduced.

Other minor changes resulting from rulings by the Society Earl Marshal have been made as detailed in the change log.

January 15, 2009 New version of the fighters handbook released

Changes since version 2.0 are documented in the change log

Changes since version 2.2 are as follows:

March 30 , 2008 Notice of Suspension **Note : this has been partially revoked in January 2012**

Thrown Weapons, Slings and Staff Slings in The Kingdom of Lochac.

Sorry to do this, but I have received numerous complaints regarding the construction of thrown weapons and the impact per square inch of the same. IÂ’m suspending the use of them in Lochac for a short period of time until I can get some advise and testing done. This applies to Slings and staff slings as well.

My concern is that being hit in the back of the head or in the side of the helmet by either a 200gram thrown axe or a 500gram ball, when youÂ’re not ready for it, might cause some damage to the person. Count Stephen and I bounced two axes at Rowany (due to the manner of construction) and IÂ’ve been told that people are making throwing maces that hit like rocks.

I need time to look into this and make sure the weapons are safe and that the construction is correct.

This does not affect Combat Archery or Siege Weapons. Sorry if this is putting people out...safety is my major concern here, nothing else.

Could all marshals please send this out and have it published in your local news letter.

October 12 , 2007 Rules update

Version 2.1 of the Kingdom of Lochac Combat Handbook has been released. The change log since version 2.0 can be found here.

August 25 , 2007 Announcement

Helms:

Some confusion seems to be existing with the use of the old light helms and the new Kingdom Laws. This should clarify the misunderstanding.

All helms are to conform to the current armour standards for the Kingdom of Lochac. The only exemption is for helms constructed prior to August 2004 (So called light combat helms) and that helm must and can only be used by the owner as a Plumed Combat Archer  helmet. The helmet cannot be used by any other person or given or sold to any other person for use in the SCA.  That exemption is a grandfather exemption that was given for two years so that people had time to bring their helmet up to the new society wide heavy minimum standard. That exemption was extended by me to till 1st August 2008 to fall in line with the final change over date for all armour.

“Grandfathered light helms” are not to be sold or given for use to any other person. The owner of the helmet prior to 1st August 2004 is deemed to be the owner of the helmet now and the only person who can use the helmet.

Just to make it clear for everyone and  all marshals….if anyone hands on or sells a “Grandfathered Archery Helm” for use on the field marshals are instructed to “pull” both the users and formers owners authorizations until the matter has been fully investigated. I will not allow these few old “light” helms to keep doing the rounds because people won’t get off their ass and make a new helmet.

Hope this makes it clear for everyone.

July 6, 2007 New adult authorisation forms are available for download. The new forms now include the date of birth for the combatant which is required. It also includes the mailing addresses as to where the forms should be sent and notice that it is required to send a stamped self addressed envelope with the submition so the card can be returned.

June 22, 2007: : The new Kingdom of Lochac Fighters Handbook has been released. This supplants all previous revisions of the KOLCH and will be effective from Monday the 25th of June 2007. This is the fighters' handbook only, not the whole KOlCH. The revised marshals handbook is still being worked on and will be released along with the fighters handbook as a combined KOLCH as soon as it is ready. This is an entirely new handbook, not just a revision of the previous KOLCH and there are a significant number of changes from the previous version as well as an entirely new format. Please take the time to read and become familiar with it. Plumed participants (lights) have until August 1st 2008 to come into compliance with minimum legal heavy armour standards. All other standards, including other changes to the in these rules come into effect from Monday the 25th of June 2007. Please send feedback on the document and/or the rules to kolch@sca.org.au. This book is not carved in stone. It is intended to be a living document and updates will be published as and when necessary. When minor updates are released the minor version number will be bumped e.g., from 2.0 to 2.1. A major revision (e.g., 2.4 up to 3.0) will be released every two years or every major revision of the society rules, whichever comes first. So that people with printed copies don't have to print the whole thing again when minor changes are made, in addition to being incorporated into the book an errata sheet will be updated containing all changes from the last major revision. - Lord William de Wyke

June 22, 2007: "People of Lochac the above message from my Deputy Combat Laws ends a two year evolution of the KOLCH. Make no mistake...this was not the work of this Earl Marshal...I did nothing...total credit for all the long hard hours of meticulous research, qualitative and quantitative analysis together with effective evaluation have been achieved only by the dedication of Lord William, Master Llewelyn and their hard working team who contributed to this final product. I've always said that consultation and open discussion will be the hallmark of my tenure in office and Lord William and his team have taken this to the highest levels in the true sense of the words. My personal thanks to William Lord William, Master Llewelyn and their team".for such a fine product."
