Lochac Brewers Vintners and Imbibers Guild

our brews

We are the Brewers, Vintners and Imbibers Guild, of the  Kingdom of Lochac (Australia and New Zealand) in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA – a worldwide living history group).

As members of a wider living history community we share a common interest in brewing and wine making as practiced in the Middle Ages, and the responsible consumption of said beverages.

This includes but is not limited to beers, ales, gruit (herb beers), meads, ciders, wines (both grape and fruit), liqueurs, fortified wines, spirits (where that is legal) and medieval medicinal brews.

We also look at allied arts such as malting, bee-keeping, barrel making, bottling and the cultivation of grapes, herbs and fruit.

Membership

To join the guild all you need do is sign up to our mailing list.

Here you will receive all official notices and news for the guild, and be able to lodge your vote on any matters put to the membership. Feel free to ask any questions here and to share brewing resources, but do try to keep chatter to a minimum. This is a low traffic, only members can post list with no spam issues.

If you have any problems signing up, contact the moderators here.

BarrelpourWe also have a Facebook page where you can chatter to your heart’s content, ask questions, tell us about your latest project or share recipes and photographs.

Guild Leadership

The guild is headed by the Clerk who is elected by the membership every year before the change over at Festival. If you have any enquiries but do not wish to sign up as a member please direct them to the Clerk.

We also have a Webminister who maintains the website. If there are any problems with the site please let the Webminister know.

Meetings

The guild hosts two main meetings a year, at Rowany Festival (Lochac’s largest camping event of the year, held over Easter near Sydney, Australia) and Canterbury Faire (held some time around mid January,  near Christchurch, NZ). These meetings are primarily to taste the results of the memberships skills in the various brewing arts. For details of these meetings please see our calendar.

Competitions

From time to time the guild will sponsor competitions in the brewing arts. Such competitions will be judged by senior members of the guild and tasting notes given to those who enter. If you would like to see such a competition at an SCA event you are involved with please contact the Clerk. See our calendar for up coming competitions.

Guild rankings

Members may advance themselves through the guild ranks by proving their skill and commitment to the senior guild members. Members are not required to rank but may do so if they wish. You can read more about this on our Guild Rankings page.

Resources

Individual guild members have access to a wide variety of early recipes, recipe books and other brewing resources, as well as there own articles and brewers blogs. Our resource page will give you links to some of our favourite online resources and we hope to grow our collection. If you have any resources you’d like to contribute or links you’d like to add please contact the Webminister.
